As we enter the holiday season I was thinking of the expectations that often accompany this time of year. Family, friends, parties, presents, travel, extra spending, or the lack of any of those can lay a heavy burden on us or hinder our ability to reflect on all that for which we can be grateful. A big expectation I always have is enjoying the end of year as a time to slow down and move through the days with an extra dose of peace and tranquility. It's funny though how planning, preparing, and spending time with "those we love" can have the opposite effect. Many of us can be pulled in multiple directions mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

It's important to remember we humans are one being with 3 expressions which are in constant relationship with each other: mind, body, and soul. Moving through life with the awareness of all three expressions is critical to knowing who we are and where we are in order to inform who we want to be and where we want to go.

We are gifted with the ability to reason, to think in the abstract. The human body is both and at the same time incredibly resilient and immensely fragile. And then of course science nor anyone else has ever been able to explain consciousness, that awareness we have about our relationship with ourselves, others, the physical world, and our unique ability to know that our time here is limited.

Oh, the complexity and beauty of the human experience! It’s easy to see why our mind, body, and soul can pull us in three different directions.

In our technologically advanced world distractions run amok both personally and professionally, connectivity is a drug, sedentariness is at an all-time high, and the kinetic nature of the world itself can be quite unsettling. A common tactic deployed to help manage these interferences we all face is the prevalent concept of compartmentalization. Compartmentalization is a psychological and organizational concept that involves separating different aspects of your life, thoughts, or emotions into distinct "compartments" or categories.

Compartmentalization can be a useful coping mechanism in certain situations, allowing individuals to maintain focus, protect their emotional well-being, or manage complex information effectively. However, excessive compartmentalization can lead to difficulties in processing emotions, stress, or a lack of work-life balance. The ability to strike a balance between compartmentalization and integration of different aspects of life is important for overall well-being and effectiveness.

I suggest to you it’s more important than ever to understand, honor, and nourish our three expressions comprising our single being. Said another way, that peace, that lasting peace that’s so fleeting and elusive is on the other side of aligning our mind, body, and soul. True peace is when the mind, body, and soul are aligned, freeing you to engage life from a balanced and sturdy posture. You're ready at every turn no matter what life throws your way. Life is just managed more easily when there's a deep, abiding peace. What to do?
